MAIB reports on Fraserburgh fishing crew fire deaths
A
Marine Accident Investigation Branch report into the deaths of 3 commercial
fishermen as they slept on board the fishing vessel Vision II in Fraserburgh
last August concludes that the fire may have been ignited by a cigarette or a
faulty heater. The fire alarm did not function because it had no power supply,
a fire door closing mechanism was disabled and none of the deceased had the
benefit of safety awareness training.
The investigation identified a number of concerns: the fitting out of the
vessel; its operation; self-certification; and inspection. It also highlighted
the increased number of foreign crews living on board fishing vessels in
harbour, without the consequent safety aspects being assessed
